SUSTAINABLE URBAN MOBILITY PLANNING

Sustainable Urban Mobility - is different to the traditional transport plan as it focuses more on people and their quality of life in an urban area. There is an emphasis on safety, involvement with community, stakeholders, coordination between government agencies and basic mobility needs as well as costs and benefits of all other transport modes.

The following definition of a ”Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan” has been widely accepted in Europe and internationally:

“A Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan is a strategic plan designed to satisfy the mobility needs of people and businesses in cities and their surroundings for a better quality of life. It builds on existing planning practices and takes due consideration of integration, participation, and evaluation principles.”

  • Develop measures that are functional for an urban area and improve road safety and sustainability

  • Assessment of current and future performance of the urban area

  • Determine most effective strategies to achieve safety, mobility and alignment with sustainability goals

  • Development of long term vision and implementation plan
